THE NEW CLOSE

Having been milk producers for many years a decision was made to disperse the New Close herd of Pedigree British Friesians but to retain the cross bred blue females to form a commercial herd. Following on from this and with a growing admiration for the Pedigree British Blues a few embryos were purchased and implanted into the crossbred females. The resulting calves, along with modest purchases of stock from both private and herd reduction sales of well established and renowned pedigree ‘Blue’ herds, together became the nucleus of the NEW CLOSE herd of Pedigree British Blue cattle.

The heifers were allowed to mature naturally and were then put to a variety of bulls that has resulted in them producing excellent progeny for both show and sale.

One of the first bulls to come to maturity was New Close Amos, by Three Ways Superstar out of Chancellors Utmost, and after being lightly shown with many successes he was sold in March 2006 for 6,100gns. One of his sons, New Close Cannon, out of Lukeroyal Wish, now stands at the Genus Stud.

New Close Colonel, a Mountjoy Utopia son out of Hazlewood Tinkerbell, was nominated and selected under the young bull scheme by Eblex on his EBV figures. He was offered for sale at Carlisle in May 2009 and sold to. EA and DA Ellis’s Trencrom herd for 6,000gns.

New Close Captain, another Mountjoy Utopia son this time out of Chancellors Utmost, sold at a British Blue Cattle Society show and sale in March 2009 for 4,900gns into the Hawktree Pedigree British Blue herd of Geoffrey Brown, Devon.

The brood cows have produced another crop of very promising calves in the current year and it is the intention to retain some of the heifers, with others, along with the bulls, being sold.

The aim for the future is to continue to source quality genetics and build on the rapidly increasing reputation of the NEW CLOSE herd.
